Today, I tried to do some panning and used what was in the book to do so. I knew that for panning, I would need a slow shutter speed so that the background would blur but the subject would still stay in focus. I found a street where the cars were going fairly quickly and decided to try some panning on them. Panning was a lot more challenging than I thought that it would be. With such a low shutter speed and because I was shooting in the middle of the day, I had to have a very high aperture so that my exposure would be correct. The subjects of my picture needed to be in focus, so I had to make sure they were in focus, start moving my camera at about the same speed they were going, and then click the shutter to take the picture. It took many tries to get the panning right and I ended up with some pretty awful pictures where everything was blurred. The pictures I ended up with did not have quite as blurred of a background as the pictures in our book, but I think they still make the cars look like they are moving faster than they really are. The most challenging part of panning was getting the vehicle to me in focus, but the background blurred.
